N95 Mask Decontamination

N95 Mask Decontamination

Considering the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases within Johnson County, Kansas and the increasing health risk to citizens, Sheriff Hayden has approved the emergency use of Criminalistics Laboratory (JCSOCL) personnel and equipment to decontaminate filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) used by first responders and health care workers in Johnson County free of charge.

Masks processed at the JCSOCL will be subjected to Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) through exposure to UVC light. Decontamination and subsequent reuse of FFRs (compatible N95 respirators) should only be practiced as a crisis capacity strategy when new FFRs cannot be obtained. At present, FFRs are considered one-time use, and there are no manufacturer authorized methods for FFR decontamination prior to reuse.

Decontamination services will be provided by appointment only at the following location:

Johnson County Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory
11890 South Sunset Drive
Olathe, KS 66061

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
